The well is deep

“The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?”

‭‭John‬ ‭4:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The woman at the well had no idea at first Jesus was speaking in spiritual terms. Little did she know how deep Jesus was trying to get to in her soul. How true it is for us too! When Christ is dealing with us, His intention is never to stay on the surface level with us but to plummet into the depth of who we are. We are the ones who desire to stay on the surface, breathing air instead of drowning in inspiration. We are more afraid of being inspired than expiring, for being inspired means that we have to be filled with something foreign to us…The Spirit Of God. His well is deep.

We are not even aware of how deeply God wants to take us. The depth of searching out God’s Spirt is mysterious and requires time and energy. We would rather be gifted than to search out God. What is amazing is that He is reaching out for us and all we have to do is reach out to Him. He is near but the well is deep!

He has nothing to draw water with because He isn’t there ultimately for water but for work. The work Jesus wants to do in us is a deeper work than we can imagine. This work will not only take time and energy but require going to a depth that may be painful. The well is deep but the water there is alive and full of healing. He isn’t trying to get water as much as give it. Will you take a drink? Will you go deeper with Him?
