Taking The Initiative

5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
2 Peter 1:5-8

God will not do everything for me. There are certain things only He can do and certain things He leaves for me to do. If I am to “add” to my faith virtue or any other character quality, then I must not only make the effort in faith but follow through.

Changing a habit isn’t easy but I have to start somewhere at some point. The question is how badly do I want to change? Adding (and thus subtracting) from my life isn’t always going to be convenient or easy but I must do it to continue to grow and conform to the image of Christ.

There are certain things I already know to do; I don’t have to pray about it or seek Holy Spirit’s guidance. There isn’t always going to be some miraculous sign from heaven on what to do. Oftentimes He has already made known to me what next step to take. I simply must pick up my foot and take it. Adding one step or one more virtue to my life can start today if I will simply take the initiative and do it.
