Love is…

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:7-12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Love is to be celebrated but not worshiped. It is easy in our culture to worship a quality that is not a deity. God is the One we worship, not love. We do not elevate love to be god or above God.

Love, however is one of God’s attributes but not all that He is as He is holy, just, pure, etc. God loves and shows His love in varied ways to us, ultimately through the death of His son, Jesus. If anyone knows and is Love, God does and God is. The only way we know love is because He first loved us.

As we understand true and real love we can no longer be self-seeking for that is not love but lust ( a shadow of love), we become givers and not takers. We become people who sacrifice and serve because that is what Jesus did, all for love. We respond in love and forgive as we have been forgiven, not because it’s easy but because it’s love. Real love from God our Father doesn’t leave us the same and it doesn’t leave us nor abandon us. God’s love is unique in every way and only possible because of God. Without God in our lives, unconditional love could never be fully understood.

How has God’s love changed you?

How have you seen love redefined in your life?

What can you do in response to God’s love for you and others?
