“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.””
Isaiah 6:8 ESV
What Isaiah heard was a general question from God. He was eavesdropping in on God’s conversation. The Trinity was talking amongst themselves and Isaiah’s volunteering was out of sheer delight to serve. Sometimes we may be looking for a specific call on our lives yet the call has already been put forth by God: Who will go for us? It is specific individuals who hear and then respond. The point isn’t that they have heard something special, the point is they have heard the heart of God.
God’s heart is for the world. His heart is that people would know Him. Individuals who draw close to God will hear this call to be going. It wasn’t that there was a special and specific call for Isaiah but that when he got time with God and saw Who He really was, Isaiah’s ears heard clearly.
If we will simply start doing some of the general things we know God wants, we will begin to see specific things He wants us to do. God’s call on our lives isn’t so much that he’s got a special plan for us but through making Him special in our lives we begin to understand His heart. As we understand His heart we begin to have a sense of calling and we take specific steps to fulfill His desires.
Volunteering for the call of God in our lives may not make sense to others. But when we hear God’s question for who will go… we must make a decision.
