Passage:
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”

Paraphrase:
Lord, you have been living before everything and we find our life in you. There’s nothing that existed before you! Before the mountains, the earth, the universe, you are from eternity past to eternity future. As a moral man, we return back to the dust from which we came at your word…all you have to do is say it and it is so, we’re biting the dust. Days are nothing to you; a day is like a thousand years. Like a flash flood, time comes rushing in and then it’s gone! Like a forgotten dream or the grass in the yard, both are vivid for a moment but then fading into the future.
Your anger causes us to shrivel up and die, your wrath leads us to utter destruction. You have shown us our sinfulness even those things that we try so hard to hide in the dark are brought into the light because of your presence. Your anger brings us to an end, like a sigh our years come to an end. Even though we may live to 70 or 80 all of those years are full of trials and troubles and then they are gone. Poof! Just like that; they’re gone!
Premise:
We only have a certain number of days to live. Those years are full of trials and tribulations but it’s important to squeeze as much life out of them as possible because they won’t last long. In all of those days, it’s important to fill them with God because we will be judged for what we do in those days. Everything will be manifest before God. There’s nothing we can hide from him.
It’s wise to live for God because he’s existed all along and knows all there is to know. He’s seen people come and go and yet He’s still here. Worship Him and live for Him because He’s God.
Ponder:
How long is eternity?
What secret sins will be brought into the light in His presence?
Are you living your life to the fullest?
Principle:
God is eternal and has always existed.
Man is mortal and only has a few short years of life on earth.
Everything we do will be judged by God.
Practice:
Love each day to the fullest degree possible.
Don’t harbor any secret sins.
Worship God and praise Him for His eternality.
Prayer:
Dear God,
You are the eternal, everlasting God. There is no one greater than you. No one even compares. Thank you for loving a mortal man like me and for having mercy. You know I am but dust and yet you have given me life and made it full! Forgive me to my sins, even the things that have been hidden from others, they are not hidden to you. Continue to reveal yourself to me that I may live all the days of life for your glory.
