“Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.””
Mark 10:35-45 NKJV
The two sons of Zebedee came to Jesus, namely James and John. They said to Him point blank: “teacher, we want you to do something for us”. Jesus responded by asking: “what is it about hat you want me to do?” They said: “allow us to sit right next to you, one on each side when the Kingdom comes.” Jesus said: “you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Do you think you can drink from the same cup I will be drinking from? Can you handle being immersed in this world of sin as a Follower of mine and live the way I’ve lived?” They both said: “yes, we believe we can.” Then Jesus said: “it’s true that you will drink from the same cup and be immersed in this world of sin, just like Me, but it is not for me to say who sits on the right or left in the Kingdom. That role is for my Father alone to decide. It’s has already been determined and when the Kingdommcomes you will see.”
When the others heard this conversation, they became indignant with James and John. However Jesus used this as a time to teach them about the Kingdom. He said: “you all know how the Gentiles (all these people who are not Jewish) used their authority to rule over people. It’s not going to be that way with you in the Kingdom. In my Kingdom, the ones who want to be great will serve others. In fact the one who wants to be first should be the servant of all. For even the Son of Man didn’t come to be first and be served by all but to give His life in service for others.”
Service is a huge part of the Kingdom of God.
Serving others is a way of life and humility along with it.
Jesus doesn’t shy away from the request of James and John but instead He uses it as a teaching time. Use teachable moments to make your point. Listen to the heart of the request.
Address the heart of the matter. Exemplify the right attitude and spirit of Christ: humble service.
Am I making requests that are out of line with the way of the King and Kingdom Living?
How can service and humility be better demonstrated in my daily life?
Do I feel I deserve something better than others?
Am I being like Christ not only in my actions but in my heart?
Those who practice humility on earth and serve others will be blessed in the Kingdom.
Humble myself and keep a mindset of humility.
Be a servant to all, not just those that I like or personally know.
Lord as you came to serve others, help me to do the same, without bias and with humility. Give me a servants heart and mind that I may bless those around me and build your Kingdom on earth.
