It’s been a little over 7 weeks since my surgery to insert a rod from my knee to ankle to correct a spiral fracture. Today I had another visit with the doctor and he said I am able to walk without the crutches! Praise God for that! I’ll be in the boot for a few more weeks but I can start putting full weight on the leg. After those couple weeks or so, I should be able to use a regular shoe without a problem.
Right now, I still have some swelling and numbness in my knee and top of my foot. I can’t fully bend my foot in all directions yet but I have been to Physical Therapy a couple of times already and we are working on that. Overall the progress has been great and God is bringing the healing.
A couple of quick lessons to take away. First, not all parts heal at the same rate or in the same way. The majority of my leg has feeling but some parts are still numb. This is an important lesson in dealing with people, right? Not everyone heals at the same rate or in the same way as do. Let’s remember to show grace and compassion to those who are hurt and healing whether it is emotionally, spiritually or physically.
Secondly, do the work. Strength doesn’t come from trying to avoid pain or prevent aches. If I don’t do the therapy or push myself to exercise my leg and use it again, it will atrophy and become useless. No matter the pain (and thankfully I haven’t had any from my leg) sometimes the stretches or pressing on the scar tissue does cause pain and discomfort; I have to do it to return back to normal.
Thirdly, get rid of the crutches! They have been a huge help to me for sure! But I wasn’t made for crutches. When I had to use them my hands were limited and so was much of everything else. Now that I am free of them, I have a lot more freedom. I’m not sure what crutches you may be relying on that you need to move away from, but let me assure you that even you don’t feel completely secure without them yet, you’ll love the freedom!
Thanks to all who have assisted and prayed for me! You have all been a blessing in tremendous ways! May God bless you greatly!
