What You Think Matters

Have you ever thought about what you think about? It may sound like a weird question but there’s no doubt that what we think about most will affect us most. It really does matter what we fill our minds with. This is why Paul admonishes us to “renew our minds” in Romans 12:2.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

If we aren’t careful with our thoughts then we are living carelessly because what we think affects how we live. Our thoughts have the capacity to take us to the translate us to places we’ve never been as well as take to places we can’t seem to escape. Our minds can be a prison for some and dream factories for others. Being that our minds are so powerful, shouldn’t we do all we can to protect them? To guard them? Once again Paul admonishes us to

take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. 2 Corinthians 10:5-6

Every thought matters. What we think, we become…thoughts eventually become matter. And this is why it matters. We are told by Jesus Himself to worship the Lord and love Him with all of our heart, soul, and mind(Matthew 22:37). When we meditate on Jesus, think about Him and His love, consider His ways, we are loving Him with our minds. When we are thinking about Him, we are becoming like Him.

Throughout today, let me encourage you to think about what you’re thinking about. Consider how those thoughts are shaping your reality. Consider how your thoughts are affecting your choices or your direction in life. If these choices and direction aren’t godly, then submit your thoughts and mind to the Lord and begin taking each thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

God wants us to glorify Him with our minds as much as our actions and since our minds affect our actions, we should start there because what we think…matters.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
