Details. Details. Details. They matter. In fact, for the leader, everything matters. There’s nothing that you are going to deal with that doesn’t have some impact, even in the smallest of ways upon your life. comments, attitudes, and certainly words/actions have a profound impact upon us. And we use those very same things to make an impact upon others. It’s all about the details.
God is a God of details. So don’t underestimate the small things in your life, thinking that it doesn’t matter or that it’s insignificant. Don’t become so focused on the forest that you miss the fallen branch. God may be desiring to deal with you about a certain thing and yet you are too focused on something that seems a “bigger deal” to you. Stop thinking like and focus on what God is showing you. Be obedient in the smallest of details because God notices all things, even the small things.
Oswald Chambers said:
The fact that it doesn’t matter much to you may mean that it matters a great deal to God. Nothing should be considered a trivial matter by a child of God. How much longer are we going to prevent God from teaching us even one thing? But He keeps trying to teach us and He never loses patience. You say, “I know I am right with God”— yet the “high places” still remain in your life. There is still an area of disobedience. Do you protest that your heart is right with God, and yet there is something in your life He causes you to doubt? Whenever God causes a doubt about something, stop it immediately, no matter what it may be. Nothing in our lives is a mere insignificant detail to God.
Staying spiritually fit means that we must give attention to the details of our lives. As a person desiring to be physically fit monitors food consumption, exercise, and even sleep, so must those who aspire to be spiritually fit. The Holy Spirit is our Spiritual “Fit Bit”, prompting, prodding and producing in us the right motivation to accomplish God’s will in all the details of life.
In the book of Galatians, chapter 5:7-8, Paul speaks a bit about staying spiritually fit:
7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”
He then goes on to say in verses 16-18 and then 25:
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
What Paul is pointing out is that we have a Guide who lives inside of us and God’s Spirit is the One Who makes us aware of what details to give attention. If we are to become all that God has created us to be, we need to give attention to those details and stop focusing on other things that God is not focused on at this moment. In time, God will bring every detail into close inspection. For now, just deal with the details God is giving you.
Final thought: Be obedient in the small things because they really do matter.
