Holy Tuesday

“Then they watched him carefully and sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They wanted to take advantage of what he might say so that they could deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. Thus they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and show no partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right for us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar or not?” But Jesus perceived their deceit and said to them, “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” They said, “Caesar’s.” So he said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Thus they were unable in the presence of the people to trap him with his own words. And stunned by his answer, they fell silent.”

Today is supposed to be tax day in the USA. However in GA it is has been extended.  On this day in the Holy Week, Tuesday, Jesus is confronted by the Pharisees about paying taxes. They are trying to see where Jesus’ loyalty is. They are looking to frame Jesus and ultimately want to kill Him.

Their motives are wrong. What are your motives for what you do? What loyalty do I need to show to the Lord?

This passage says they pretend to be sincere. It is important to remember Jesus knows my heart and why I am doing whatever it is I may be doing. How sincere am I with my actions? How loving am I when serving? How faithful am I to God even when I’m dealing with the government and other secular officials? Am I doing what is right by God?

Jesus isn’t fooled by their deceit. He is aware of what they are attempting. It is important to have discernment and be aware of what is going on by other leaders, even “spiritual” ones. There are many deceivers in the world using religion to manipulate others. Be sure to stay away from them.

Jesus astounds the Pharisees with His answer to give to Caesar what belongs to him and to God what belongs to Him. As a follower of Christ, I am to give myself completely to God. I am His image-bearer. Thankfully, He has placed His image on me and I am claimed by Him. Jesus deserves my life as He has given me His. He has loved me beyond measure. My giving of myself back to His service is the least I could do.
