Digging Deeper With The Woman At The Well

“Where then do you get that water”? It’s a simple question. The Woman at the well wasn’t trying to be difficult, she just didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about. How often has that been the case for me? I know what I’m doing and how things work and yet Jesus seems to be talking about something entirely different. And He was.

He is the water! He is what I need. I don’t need Him to give me something else but to give me Himself. That is exactly what Christ aims to do.

She *said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?John 4:11 NASB

Everything the woman says makes sense on a temporal plane. However, Christ is wanting to take her, me, us deeper.

The woman says the well is deep and she is correct. This well was established by Jacob long ago…so not only is it deep but it is old. How deep and old are some of the areas of my own heart, soul, that need Christ to replenish with fresh, living water? How much deeper is the well within my soul that was never filled with the Living water; that went dry years ago because nothing was ever flowing into it? No healing waters. No fresh waters from Heaven.

To have the Living Water she would have to allow Him to dig deeper. This is what we all must do: let Christ dig down deeper into the recesses of our souls and bring His Life-Giving waters. He doesn’t need anything to draw out the water because He’s looking to pour the water in! He wants to dig deeper and let the water rush in from beneath and flood the well so that it’s gushing out!

37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38

Going deeper with Christ isn’t always an easy task. It can seem like He doesn’t have the tools to do the job but He has all that He needs. He is the tool that will draw the water and also provide it. I must give access to my soul’s well and let Him draw up whatever He chooses and then continue to let Him dig deeper for fresher waters each new day.
